'Machinima' Becoming Used for Social Criticism

An interesting read over at Backstage.com. It goes into the social ranges that not only machinima is crossing into but is enabling people to speak to. Nice to see the medium referenced in such a positive way. Now if we could just get more films demonstrating this social power.
Habib Zargarpour, a senior art director at Electronic Arts in Vancouver, observed that during the past six months there has been a convergence of more user-friendly tools -- in particular "The Movies" -- and more users becoming aware that they can quickly craft stories at home in animated 3-D environments.

"The video game narrative is defining its own genre partially because of its look but also because real-time graphics engines allow people to work faster and get ideas out," Zargarpour said. "That development really puts animated storytelling tools in the hands of almost anybody who has a computer, and that opens doors to thousands of new voices."
How can you change the world for the better through Machinima? Just tell your stories. Show people what the world looks like from your eyes. We all learn from each other.

I appreciate that hope for machinima, but it's not going to happen unless there is a wider sense of social responsibility in the culture at large. More people are interested in getting a new Ipod update.

There were lots of problems in that article which include zero research and fact checking. The reference to early machinima being "dark pornography" was particularly galling.

Sorry, but I just didn't take the article very seriously. Backstage is a magazine/newsletter that comes out weekly on both coasts. It's audience is primarily actors looking for work. Backstage does not have a very good reputation for reporting on anything outside of the acting world.

Wow gToon. Thanks for sharing. I think the wider sense of social responsibility using machinima will come as more people turn to machinima for a personal voice. It will of course be far and few between in a sea of many voices and creative expressions at all levels but it takes very little to get attention if you are playing the right strings (ala French Democracy).

Its funny, I almost didn't even notice the porn reference. I think I paused for milleseconds. Any technology once rooted in 'teenage boys' is always dripping in sexual residue. Even if its not there people will still see it. :)
