Thinking Success

Paul Marino has updated his blog with an entry listing some recent machinima successes. My employment with BioWare is on the list and I thank Paul for the inclusion.

I've talked about my position before in relation to taking the next step from 'independent' machinima filmmaker to full time professional. BioWare is so behind this that they are sending me down to the Austin Conference in support of the Machinima Theatre to help garner any interest in people taking the next step and in doing so with BioWare. I'm really excited to be heading down to Austin in early September and look forward to meeting any other machinima enthusiasts.

Too bad they're only doing this in Austin. I'd love to talk with BioWare about it. I attempted to at the GDC, but all the reps there were more of the recruiting type and didn't really know what I was talking about.

And even more importantly than BioWare talking to US about it, is them talking to other companies about it. Us machinima artists need to convincing. It's the other companies that need convincing as to how mutually beneficial a relationship with machinima artists can be.

Sorry for typo. That was supposed to be "us machinima artists need NO convincing."

    Hey Mu,

Ya I hear you. Here's hoping BW pursues this in other avenues.

I think the thing is, BioWare sees machinima filmmakers as well suiting (where experience shows) for the internal role of cinematic designers. So the interest in machinima is more so because its a great area to find new talent for a role thats hard to fill otherwise. People are usually one extreme (cinematic artist focused on using a 3d app like Max) or the other (technically strong with game engines but a weak cinematic eye/understanding). Whether this is unique to Bioware or something other game companies will be adopting is hard to say at this point.

Yep, the adopting is what we're hoping for, and it's very positive for me to know that a great company is leading the way on it. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
